Wireless
infrastructure sites are extremely vulnerable to lightning and
the associated surges or transients. The transition in technology
from analog to highly sensitive digital equipment has increased
the risk of damage. Modern Cellular, PCS and UMTS systems have
increased the density of wireless sites, increasing the probability
of a direct strike to a site just by the number of installations
alone.
Installed in high locations, either hills or
roof tops, wireless sites are generally the highest point in any
area in order to provide optimum signal propagation. The steel
tower structure increases the probability of a direct strike to
the site, over and above, the random flash density of an area.
Small and compact, wireless base stations cannot
easily be protected by principles that are associated with buildings
or a campus. It is generally recognized that three areas of a site
require protection, the AC power, Communications to the central
controller and the RF Coax to the antenna. ASC provides many product
solutions for all three areas.
As wireless sites get more and more complex with
extremely sensitive digital equipment, additional TVSS units are
required for peripheral devices and newer technologies. ASC is
constantly developing additional products in conjunction with our
clients, to protect other venerable parts of a wireless infrastructure
site. These include DC power, LMDS, MMDS, WLL interconnect cables,
tower light controllers, and a multitude of integrated AC distribution
panels and utility cabinets.
More and more emphasis is being put onto "whole" site
solutions and ASC, with its product line of over 2,000 TVSS and
integrated devices, is able to offer a broad array of up-to-date
solutions.
